Can Illness Cause Hair Loss?
By Board-Certified Trichologist Shab Caspara
Hair loss following illness is more common than many people realize. Many people notice increased hair shedding a few months after recovering from a virus, high fever, or surgery and wonder why it is happening.
In many cases, this type of shedding is caused by telogen effluvium, a temporary condition that occurs when physical stress disrupts the hair growth cycle.
To better understand this process, read our full guide Telogen Effluvium: Causes, Symptoms, and How to Recover From Excessive Hair Shedding, which explains why sudden shedding happens and how long it typically lasts.
Illnesses That Can Trigger Hair Shedding
Hair follicles are highly sensitive to changes in the body. When the body experiences illness or inflammation, it may temporarily redirect energy away from hair growth.
Some of the most common triggers include:
high fever
viral infections
major surgery
hospitalization
severe inflammation
These physical stressors can push hair follicles into the resting phase of the hair growth cycle.
As explained in our article Telogen Effluvium: Causes, Symptoms, and How to Recover From Excessive Hair Shedding, the shedding phase usually occurs several months after the triggering event.
Why Hair Loss Appears Months Later
One of the most confusing aspects of illness-related hair shedding is the delay between the illness and the hair loss.
Hair follicles first enter the resting phase, which lasts around two to three months, before the hair begins shedding.
Because of this delay, many people do not immediately connect their illness with the hair loss they are experiencing.
Recovery Timeline
In most cases, illness-related hair loss is temporary.
Once the body recovers and the hair cycle resets, follicles return to the growth phase and begin producing new hair.
Most people see improvement within three to six months.
If shedding persists longer, a professional scalp analysis can help determine whether other factors are contributing.
